1. You live in an area where the existing area codes were overlaid with new codes when they filled up (for example, in Toronto, where 416 was overlaid with 647, and later 437). When I first joined Koodo in 2013, I got a 437 number. Some of my contacts didn't know where it was from, since it was relatively new then.

2. You live in an area where Telus/Koodo don't have numbers, so they gave you a number from a nearby area code where they do. I have heard of new subscribers in the Toronto area receiving a number in area code 289 or 365, which are overlays of 905 which serves the Toronto suburbs, Hamilton/Niagara, and nearby areas.

You can actually go into self serve and see what numbers are available in the area code. And if you feel inclined to, change your area code and number. Either Self Serve > Mobile Services or My Profile.

What area code do you have?  What do your neighbors have?
