Why do I have activation confirmation before getting my SIM?

I ordered a SIM card to switch from PM to Koodo. I finally got the shipping confirmation for my card and was waiting for it to arrive. During ordering I chose to transfer my number.

Last night while I was asleep I received several e-mails from Koodo saying "Complete your registration now" as well as another saying "Confirming your activation" and showing an account number as well as a telephone number. (this also had an attached service agreement).

It shows the plan for the promotion in the service agreement, but the e-mail includes a mobile number that is not my mobile number. I wanted to transfer my number from PM not get a new number, and I'm confident that's the option I chose in setup.

Why am I receiving service activation emails before I've received my SIM card? Why am I showing a different mobile number associated with the account number in the e-mail?

The card is coming activated, if they activated it and ported your number right away you would have had no phone service (with your old carrier) for the amount of time it took to ship it to you . Once you receive it you'll need to call and get the port done if its not done when it is delivered.

Side note If you let your public mobile account become inactive thry can not complete the port, I found this out the hard way when I activated the other day. Agent porting the number must be able to call you at your active number with your old carrier.

Thanks Paul,

That was actually my concern is why it was activated rather than my activating it online when I received the card as I had with Bell, Telus, PM, and others in the past.

I still have a lot of time remaining on my PM account so I'm not concerned about that becoming inactive. But I have had a lot of people mis-use my email account (they would typo their own email address and miss a letter and provide mine instead). I was concerned someone had inadvertently activated their account with my email address, but after reviewing the service agreement attached it does seem it is for my account (address is correct).

Which in itself begs a question of why activating an account prior to receiving the sim if there is a trial period (which I know is for the phones). Starting the trial before one receives their phone seems to be a great way of artificially shortening the trial period.

As it is, I cannot complete the self-serve registration pre the email as I don't have the sim card with that phone number. Thanks for clarifying the.. unique setup process they have.

You should be able to set up your Koodo self serve account based on the info in the email sent you.

Hi David,

You're correct. I found an additional email that had gotten lost in the inbox, because it came from Koodo Webstore instead of the activation/Customer service addresses. It had the details on how to register for self-serve and how to port my number once I receive my sim card.
