When will the Essential Phone get the Android 8.1 update?

Today Essential started pushing out the Android 8.1 update, yet Telus/Koodo customers have to wait to receive it. When can we expect it? Why can't we get these updates the same time they are released for other carriers with this phone?

Carriers need to do testing on the updates themselves before the release them onto their phones. Some carriers take longer to do testing than others.

What are you talking about I already updated mine early this afternoon and so did another mobile master. Have you tried to manually check for thr update?

Well, that is hopeful. I have manually checked for the update. Nothing. Curious, were you on the beta Paul?

Yes was running the beta for 8.1 since it was released for the OTA way to aquire it.

Maybe that is the difference. I was not. Essential pointed people who asked on their Twitter stream to this page on their website that says, "Currently, devices on all networks except Sprint and TELUS will receive instant software updates." I took that to mean we'd have to wait for the update, maybe beta testers are the exception to the rule.

Ahhhhhhhh ok that must be it then, I assumed it hit everyone. Try taking out your sim card and searching I know that was said to work for early updates with it...

Borrow someone else's sim and pop it in, then manually check for updates. I just did that and its downloading.

Do you have to have phone unlocked to try other carriers SIM?

Thank you.
If I use another carrier SIM is it going to "update" my phone to their type of settings that will still work on Telus network once I insert my SIM back?
Sorry I am not sure if my question is very clear.

Yes, you'll be fine. I just did this yesterday. Once the download and installation was completed, I popped my Koodo SIM back in. All is good.

If you can't get a different carriers sim, and can hook up your phone to a computer go here to download the 8.1 build and follow the instructions here to sideload Oreo 8.1. Make sure you do a backup first!
