Phone is a Moto G.  I'm comparing roaming charges and buying a SIM card in Italy.  If roaming I want to be sure to be able to connect to a telecom supplier with services I need.

First your phone needs to be unlocked. If you've never done it or bought it from a carrier it's probably locked. The only reliable way to see is to pop a SIM card from another carrier into your phone. If it is locked, Motorola phones are about 3 to $5 to get an unlock code from eBay or other third-party resellers. After that, you can just pop in any SIM card and it will connect automatically.

If you rely on Koodo roaming packages, you will only connect to their roaming partners. You have no choice in the matter. Choose your country in the window below:

independent overseas suppliers (unlocked phone):

If you buy a roaming package, the phone will automatically connect to the best network around. Nothing special to do.
