I would like to know what is international voice roaming and what does it give me.

It's an add-on which lets you make calls whenever you go outside of the country. Without this, you will not be able to make calls in the US for example.

I believe you do get service in the US on post-paid without the international add-ons, unless something has changed recently.

Every now and then some people near the border get an unwanted roaming charge because their phone accidentally latched onto a stronger US tower.

If you don't allow international roaming on self-serve, you will not connect with any tower outside of country code 1 (US & Canada), so it's very important to activate before heading overseas.

I believe the international features are not activated by default in order to prevent some really unpleasant $urprise$: you can rack up big bills at $1.50-$2.50 per minute and $5-$10 per MB. So it's definitely best to consider a roaming package or unlocking and using a local SIM. Expand the Travelling outside the US link:

You're correct Bob! The international voice roaming feature is not needed to have service in the US.
