What happened to Koodo? No longer a good deal.

The price of getting getting a new phone on Tab has gone way up for me. Currently I pay $35 with an iPhone 5S I got on tab from Koodo. When I upgrade to an iPhone 6S later this year, assuming the plans stay as they are, I will need to get an $86 dollar plan. That's an increase of $51 in just two years.

Obviously more data comes with that plan, a whole 500MB more (I'm kidding, that's not worth $50), and I'll get unlimited voice and text, but I hardly use voice and don't need it. I should also mention I'm "grandfathered" on an older $30 base plan from a few years ago, one which is now ~$35.

Why is this? Well you now have to get a Tab Plus, which starts $65, and instead of paying an extra $5 a month to pay down the tab, you pay $21. Koodo also used to put 10% of your bill towards paying down the tab, which I'm not sure it does anymore from reading the product pages.

When I got my iPhone 5S there was a plan to get the phone for a few hundred dollars off and stay on a sanely priced plan. Now the only option is to get the phone at about half off but with a crazy expensive plan.

For me, the obvious option is to use a $30-$40 plan on Wind and buy the phone out-right, same for the other line on my account. Koodo used to be a no-brainer.

Hope you reconsider and bring back Tab "light" for new iPhones.

You don't have to have a tab plus at all. You just have to pay for the phone more up front if you want to avoid it higher monthly plans. Wind doesn't have iphones yet as you mentioned, when they do they will sell them for the same price as everyone else. That's an apple thing. Since you are willing to buy the phone outright why not just stay on the plan you have. Better network too.

The Koodo site no longer lists the Tab "light" options on the iPhones. Only Tab Plus. Is the site wrong and just not listing them? Is it only available in-store then?

iPhones work fine on Wind, but must be purchased unlocked, such as at the Apple Store. That I understand. As I said in my post, I would rather "use a $30-$40 plan on Wind and buy the phone out-right". I didn't mean to say the phone was cheaper on Wind, just the plans.

iPhones are only available in store anyway. I think they sort of enforce carriers to mention the plans where they appear to be the "cheapest" (least amount of $$$ up front), that is why you will always see them listed with Tab Plus plans. But in actual fact you can get them on any Tab, or even buy outright, on any of the plans.

If that's the case, it's a serious problem with the website. I was helping my friend shop for a phone and they won't be getting Koodo any longer because the offer I told them about wasn't there.

Hey Noah,
The new tab system is a little bit different than the old one and I think that's where the confusion is coming from. Koodo has a tab, and tab plus. With the tab you can put up to $360 on the tab and depending on how much you put on the tab the monthly tab charge can be anywhere from $1-$15. With tab plus, you can put up to $504 with a monthly tab charge of $21 and a separate group of plan choices. If you have money to pay upfront for the phone you can go with a regular tab, keep your old plan. You would pay the cost of the phone, less $360 in store, and your monthly plan would only cost $45. After the two years and your tab is paid off it will go back to your regular $30!
