My son's phone is broken (screen shattered and it won't turn on) and I need to know what the options are in possibly getting a new phone.

You can go to koodo and get another phone.
You can buy the phone outright, or get the phone on tab.  If you get a tab, then you need to pay off your old tab if you have one.  Depending on the tab and your plan, you may need to plan that qualifies for a tab.

Staples also has unlocked phones for sale.

You can also bring it in for repair, but if it also wont turn on in additon to the shattered screen, it sounds like there is more internal damage

You can pay off any tab owing and purchase a new phone on the tab or outright from Koodo. Or buy a compatible phone from elsewhere.
Your last option is to get the phone fixed but it will probably cost more than its worth unless its a high end phone.

You can send it in for repair and pay full price. Here are the out of warranty repair prices. Guessing you don't have applecare+

You can use the tab to get a new phone. I'd his line or whomever still has a tab owing, you'd have to pay off what's left first

Alternatively you can just buy a phone off of Kijiji or some other used marketplace or get a phone outright new online somewhere or at a store that sells phones.

IF you go with the last option, make sure it is unlocked and not stolen (https://www.devicecheck.ca/check-status-device-canada/). You would then just need to switch SIM card from your old phone to the new one.
