I just bought a prepaid phone from koodo today and got the 35$ basic plan. I tried making a call to the united states and it said I needed to get a booster or an add on for that. I don't want to purchase the wrong add on/booster. so I guess basically I am just wondering exactly what I should get.

If you want long distance minutes, you need "Canada wide talk booster".

You need a talk booster. There are three types available: $25 for 500 anytime minutes, $10 for 100 anytime minutes, and $5 for 25 anytime minutes. Note that these "minutes" will vary depending on the destination of your call.

1 min Canada call will deduct 1 Anytime minute.
1 min US call will deduct 2 Anytime minutes.
1 min international call will deduct 5 Anytime minutes.

So if you have the $25 booster and you make a 10 minute call to the US, it will deduct 10 x 2 x $0.05 = $1.

Since you have a base plan that includes free local evenings/weekends, you could save money by calling during those times using a different long distance provider that has a number that is local to you. That's slightly less convenient, though.
