I was chargedan extra $5 for the upgrade, but it was a free upgrade

Then you misunderstood how this works. The $5 charge is for the new phone you got that you are paying off monthly. There is no free lunch anywhere in the world. :-)

Medium tab comes with a month $5 tab charge. It will be removed when the negative tab is gone.

Sounds like you had a negative Tab repayment on your bill. Do you have paperwork from the store? Did the rep show this to you?
