Want To Use An FM Radio-Enabled Phone That Circumvents Canadian Carriers' Disabling

Online, there are conflicting accounts of certain makes and models of phones being able to use fm radio offline, and a couple of the biggies say that they have enabled phones upon request - untrue according to consumer forum commentators. Koodo has no plans to ever enable their offered models. Ques. #1: What models, if any in Canada, do work offline? Ques. #2: Is it doable/feasible to purchase a U.K. fm-enabled phone (apparently all U.K. phones are enabled by carriers) with a working sim card from a reputable carrier by U.K. web store from Canada, or would one have to be there in person?  Thank you.

Thank you. Please see my reply above to @Roar.

Unlocked also means you can rule out tampering of FM radio by the carrier simply because unlocked devices are not affiliated with any carrier.

I see...I guess that my query to @Roar is redundant now. That's great news to not have to purchase from a web store. I prefer to deal face-to-face in the event that I have a hardware or firmware problem down the road. Thanks, Rikkster!

Here is a list (if not all), many supported devices. And yes, the LG G6 bought from Koodo has support for fm radio.

Thanks, Allan. I was warned off all LG's and some Moto's by a Koodo rep due to manufacturing issues (online validated).

Unfortunately, the NextRadio app is not yet available for download in Canada, even though another part of the site says it is.

Good point on the G6.

Edit: the app is available on Google Play for compatible devices.

You can try installing the apkpure app followed by nextradio to bypass the geo restrictions. It won't help if the radio is disabled in firmware.

Thanks, Bob. The fm disabling is the crux. The LG6's are also toxic, until they clean up their act and the class action suit becomes more known to consumers.

AFAIK, that suit covers LG G4 and V10 models only, not the G3, G5 or G6. Or can you substantiate something else? None of that has any mention of radio shenanigans.

Hi Bob. I was warned off all LG's and some Moto models (he didn't get elaborate on which Moto models) by a *611 Koodo customer service rep who stuck his neck out for me. Lax QA is the problem re manufacturing. I returned a new LG G5 in person to a local Walmart Wireless Center from where I had purchased it (not at a Koodo kiosk), and the Wireless Center rep nodded his head in agreement when I repeated what I had been told. The Samsungs and iPhones were recommended at this time for dependability by the online Koodo rep. I'm back to my Samsung S3 until things improve. The LG G5 was heavily discounted, and it was a dream to use...too bad.
Addendum: The lawsuit has nothing to do with "radio shenanigans" - it's about QA re manufacturing. As for the LG G5, https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/04/lg-bootloop-defect-lawsuit-expands-to-cover-g5-v20-and-n....

@ Satchel, we don't disable. Some phones actually have it turned on (LG G^). It's an OEM decision. I have a brand new adapter (only for android) that plugs into your phone and thus gives access to radio frequencies. It's yours if you want it. Send a private message on Facebook, mention my name and will mail it next week.

Thank you Bernard. I found no such option on Koodo's Fcebook homepage. Link to product review? Shipping cost? Compatability with Samsung s3? Cheers.

You need to private message us on Facebook (click on send a message):

It's not a product we carry. Samples were sent to us. There wouldn't be any shipping cost. I'd send it to you. It is compatible with any Android. Not in the office till Tuesday, I can then post a link. You are taking zero risk here. :-)

Thank you, Bernard. I'm looking forward to trying out the adapter on my 3-year old Samsung S3...dodgy charging from loose micro usb port/cable connection fixed by digging out S3's pocket lint with a tiny wire, and by gently biting down on cable usb (power off!), as seen online.

For future reference, when buying unlocked phones for this purpose (FM radio), please make sure that you buy a phone that was never locked to a carrier. Phones that have been previously locked are fine in most cases, but not this case (the unlock code only unlocks the SIM slot).
