Visiting Ontario and western PQ; which bring-your-own-phone?

Last Xmas I visited the Ottawa area and brought my spare iPhone 3G. I purchased prepaid service at a mall kiosk. Once I configured the phone, voice calls and SMS worked well, but data never really worked. I could receive coupla KB, but then it would fail. I've read that the iPhone 3G never correctly worked with Koodo. (It does work correctly with AT&T south of the border.)

I'm returning to Ontario for a visit and would like Koodo service again. If the iPhone 3G still won't receive data, I have other spare phones: a Lumia 520, Samsung A777, and even a Blackberry 8750. I'd be prepared to buy an unlocked iPhone 3GS locally if that would work. What I like about the iPhone is that it's easy to install the SIM card. The other phones that I have require partial disassembly to install the SIM.

What do y'all recommend? Thanks much.

The Lumia or Samsung will work if they're unlocked

Thanks for your reply Paul. What about an unlocked iPhone 3GS?
