Hello Glenda.

Do you plan on using your phone there or just taking it? If so, read the folowing :

I'm afraid Puerto Plata is not going to be cheap for you, Glenda... in the Dominican Republic (zone 2: http://help.koodomobile.com/coverage-...) you'd pay $2.50 per minute and $10 per MB (!!!) data!
I suggest you unlock your phone and buy a local SIM card there, if possible - or use WiFi only and call with Skype, or something...

Well, then just make sure you add the folowing add-on in order to be able to use your phone there : International Voice Roaming

Do it manually with self-serve. As easy as hello

I'm not entirely clear what you are asking, if you want it for emergency only, you might even consider taking out the SIM card. You can always call 911. What phone is it, btw?
Texting will be 60 cents per message as well, both sending and receiving... that could add up quickly especially since you can't switch off receiving texts.

In my case, it's important that I am reachable at my usual "Canadian" number for short urgent calls (even if they are $2.50/min). But what would the cost be (and what add-ons would I need) to forward my phone to an 809/829/849 area code number and then change the SIM to a local one from the Dominican Republic?
Would the forwarding cost to the Dominican number be just as high or the same?

Interesting thing about that approach is at least it does stop the $0.60/text messages from being received :)

I am not 100% sure Steve, but I think I read somewhere that calls can't be forwarded to an International number... though that would need to be confirmed by someone more knowledgeable. At any rate I don't think you'd save much :)
