Do 3G phones on a GSM 850/1900 MHz, or WCDMA 3G 2100 MHz unlocked phones work on Koodo's HSPA network?

I'm looking at the Haipai 19220 android.

It needs to support hsdpa 850/1900

pretty sure the 850) part is most important. Koodo doesn't support the GSM modes at all.

I've read that koodo's HSPA network is not compatible with the GSM, but WCDMA seems to be maybe ok? Could that be right?
It's listed as WCDMA 850/2100 MHz.

Also, my current Koodo phone (LG optimus chat) has its preferred network mode set to GSM/3G auto. If Koodo doesn't work with GSM is that not kind of wrong?

No it's not wrong, If it's set to Auto it will roam around on US GSM networks so even though Koodo doesn't support it other carriers do. So the setting needs to be GSM/3G Auto to allow for roaming

I'll be honest that I'm not totally sure because of how it's listed. usually I can get specs for phones on gsmarena.com and let you know but the phone isn't listed. Where are you finding the specs? Sometimes just knowing who the original carrier is can help determine the answer. If you already have the phone, Koodo has an IMEI based tool that can tell you if the phone will work.

The Tool is here:

Please do NOT rely on the GSMarena-specs, especially when it comes spectrum data. I have found errors, told them, but they ignored it.

The underlying problem is that the manufacturers use the same model designations for different hardware and/or software. A Sony XYZ bought with one operator or in an independent store in one country might be materially different from a Sony XYZ bought elsewhere. It is very difficult to establish reliable data on these things from afar.

Hi Naomi, Unless you have the IMEI of the phone, we can’t confirm whether it will work or not on our network. This tool, that can be found on http://koo.do/NsFpez, is available to make sure you can bring in your phone and is our only resource for compatibility inquiries. Have a good day!

As mentioned in your topic, and as well as above. That phone is GSM only. Koodo does not have GSM towers = no worky

Only major carriers in Canada it would work with (maybe only ones at all) are Rogers/Fido.

Technically, ICE Wireless and Keewaytinook Mobile run GSM, too. But their footprint is special: KM operates in Norther Ontario, ICE Wireless in Whitehorse and a few places in the NWT. Unlikely that Naomi dwells there. :-)

The smaller operators from the big cities use Rogers' GSM for Roaming.

I want to upgrade the firmware of my Koodo Samsung S2, because I am not satisfied with the WI-FI function.
If I update it to AT&T standard, will my phone still work with Koodo?
The AT&T standard looks ok on 3G GSM/HSPA+, right?
Thanks a lot.

The s2x is identical to the T-Mobile Hercules the only exception is its slightly off where the radio (baseband) comes to play. For this reason if you try to roam off AT&T you'll get weird reception issues like garbled speech and dropped calls. It will probably function the same way on the reverse. Also the two phones are not quite the same phone. Even the model number is different.

Also in order to do what you're wanting to do you'd need to root your phone.

If you do decide you wish to root I highly recommend the following

Clockwork Mod Recover version 5.x (don't use v6)
Dark side Cache wipe
Dark side Super wipe

Install a well supported rom like Cyanogenmod

Then flash the Telus radio.
