Using our Android phones in Greece

When in Greece can we text and call each other on our Canadian Android phones using the phone numbers as saved in our contact lists or will we need to add a 011 or something first? We will be on two different islands for some time and need to communicate (mostly text but will need to phone for Greek taxis sometimes). I am on Koodo, my daughter is on Bell but we both have Samsung Android phones. Can we also text back home to Canada just using our contact list or have to add 011 and something else first too?

It appears from what I've found here on the Koodo site that our phones will work there. Will they just automatically find a frequency and connect or do we need to visit a phone retailer in Athens when we arrive? Any other pointers on using the phones there would be appreciated.
Thanks.

There is a Cosmocarte store in the Athens airport just after you clear customs. You can buy a SIM from them but will need to provide your passport as ID and sign the form (which is in Greek). It may be cheaper than trying to figure out if Koodo will roam on the islands as Athens is pretty well covered but elsewhere not always so much. You can just refill 5 Euro at a time and it lasts up to a year. Then again, it's been a few years since I was in Greece so it's possible things have changed. Cosmocarte had a website and I think there was an English setting.

You will want to ensure you have a quad band phone and that it is unlocked. Incoming phone calls are free so if someone calls you from Canada that doesn't count against your minutes as the caller pays. I don't remember texting internationally but if you find wifi then you could use a texting app (or Skype). You should be able to text internationally but won't really know if it worked until you get a reply.

Maybe someone has more recent information?
