Using phone abroad to call Canada

I want to use my phone in Thailand for 4 months. All i want to do is make a few calls (or texts if that is cheaper) while in Thailand to my family in British Columbia, and also to have a phone to use in the case of an emergency. I probably wont be using it for local calls at all and will only want to use it for around five calls or texts to my family to let them know of my whereabouts. What is the cheapest and easiest option for me?

I was going to suggest unlocking your phone and buy/use a prepaid SIM card in Thailand. That'd be great for local calls but don't know how much you'd need to top up to make calls back home.

This gives you a quick snapshot of what frequencies are used world-wide. You have to first make sure that your particular phone can deal with Thai frequencies.
