using data unintentionally

My son is on a prepaid monthly plan with no data. He just uses the wifi at home and public areas. His phone was acting up so he reset it and didn't realize the data was turned on again and his phone downloaded updates before he realized and now we have a $20 data bill because it used our wifi. I don't understand if we're prepaid to have no data why his phone lets him use the data and I'm not very happy about this. Any suggestions?

If you're prepaid you shouldn't be allowed to use data unless you bought data boosters. You can still use wifi as much as you want.

You won't have a $20 bill. Prepaid doesn't have bills since you prepay for usage. Once you run out funds that's it, phone won't work unless you too up. Wi-fi will still work but that's free.

Are you sure you are not on a monthly postpaid plan but the tab is all paid off?

You're right I forgot because I have a prepaid phone. His is a monthly plan that does not include data. I know when we got the phone they said to turn off data or you would end up using it and be charged. We just pay for texting and so many talk minutes a month.

You can block data at the source, by contacting Koodo directly. Contact options in the page footer. Check out self serve, as you may be able to do it there as well.
