The other carrier locked their phone so it cannot be used on another carrier without first unlocking the phone.

If it is an android phone, I highly recommend looking at ebay as they have the least expensive prices.  Just search the phone model, unlock, and the carrier your phone is locked to

That is exactly the same answer i had except for the purchase of a new phone :)
It is the IEMI I believe that you need which is usually found inside the phone you want to use and you need to get the phone unlocked using that number and after you unlock your new phone just insert your SIM card. I hope I helped you.

You have an old phone through a different carrier, if it is not Koodo, Telus or Public then you will need to get the phone unlocked no matter what.
Now you say it is prompting you for a sim unlock. This means that the phone has been reported as stolen or is not registered with a carrier. Most likely you still have the old sim card in the phone? A sim unlock requires either a personal PIN or a PUK code from the carrier the sim is with. This should be free and it just means the sim hasn't been initialized so to speak.
I would recommend unlocking the phone and then just getting a new sim card.

Just contact Koodo, Call: 1 (866) 995-6636, Facebook: https://m.me/Koodo or through Twitter dm. No matter what though you will still need your phone unlocked if it is locked with someone other than the carriers i mentioned above.
