I am travelling to the US from Canada. Just wondering what add on I should purchase to use my phone in the States and do I keep my phone on airplane mode once I purchase something?

You don't need to purchase anything but you would pay the pay-per-use rate. You can look here for the rates and the roaming packages in the states for what you think would fit your needs best: http://help.koodomobile.com/coverage-...

If you'll be gone for a long time or you will be needing heavy data use, you can look at prepaid cricket or metropcs plans for your time in the states.

Okay so one more question. It looks like my best option would be to buy a roaming add on for unlimited texts. When I'm in the states do I have my phone on airplane mode or no? Or is there something else I should be doing to my phone when I head to the states? Thanks!

You can't have your phone on airplane mode. That shuts off the radio and you won't receive texts.

I would recommend changing your ringtones so that incoming texts are very loud while the call ringtone is something that could easily be ignored. You will not be charged for calls that go thru to voicemail, but you will pay if you answer the call directly.

Have a safe trip.

To use a prepaid US carrier, your phone will have to be unlocked. I've used Tracfone before with success. Calls to Canada are at their regular rate... you're not hosed for long distance. SIM only works in continental USA, vouchers available at many Dollar and Target stores, but customer service is a foreign concept.

Oh sorry, I forgot about the airplane mode question. If you put your phone on airplane mode you shut down all radio transmissions. Only do this if you don't want any charges for use. Also FYI you can have a phone in airplane mode and then manually turn on wifi but keep everything else's off. For the states you won't have to do anything other than add the add-on ideally the day you leave while still in Canada.
