Updating S7 Edge software/firmware on unlocked phone purchased online

I bought the S7 Edge unlocked online from Costco and used the code to keep it unlocked. How do I go about receiving software updates? I searched online for the most recent updates for the S7 Edge and Koodo has one from July 19, 2016. I haven't gotten anything pushed to my phone, and my most recent update is still from April 2, 2016...

The updates should be from Samsung directly if you purchased it as unlocked as far as I'm aware.

Well then I'm even more confused now then... Doing a manual search for updates on the phone says I have the most up to date version, and Samsung already has releases newer than the Koodo one. Ignoring my outdated firmware for the moment, even my security patch is from April ,and Samsung already has July out and August coming...

I'll look more into it for you. Check the box it came in and see if there is a company name like Koodo Telus, should be on the bar code.

My S7 edge has a security patch update of July 1st. Not sure why yours doesn't.

The box is carrier free, there's no company branding on it. I ordered it from the costco.ca website, which sells the phones unlocked. It just has the phone code SM-G935W8(SMG935WK32), UPC, IMEI, and Software Version which hasn't changed since I got it.

Have you tried installing Samsung Smart Switch on your computer? According to Samsung, Smart Switch will update your device with the latest software. Give that a try and let us now if this works.

If you saw the firmware update on SamMobile dated July 19, 2016, it's possible to download the firmware to your computer and flash the new software to your device using Odin. The instructions on how to prepare your phone, flash the firmware and a link to Odin are provided. (Scroll down midway on the download page to see the instructions). The firmware includes the latest security patch dated 2016-07-01 . File size is 2.0 GB.

I'm thinking that this is what I'll probably do. Just to confirm though, do you know if Koodo adds any of their own specific software along with the updates? I know that Rogers tends to add their own bloatware at times. Since my phone isn't a Koodo branded phone, I'd like to avoid any unnecessary extras if possible.

When I installed my Koodo SIM the only bloatware that came with it was Amazon and a Sure tap app that's discontined soon. I didn't notice any other apps besides Samsung apps

So I was able to troubleshoot it myself. I checked my CSC code, dialling *#272*yourIMEI# and it came up as MTA. MTA is I believe MTS which was my old provider. It seems when I put my Koodo SIM in, it didn't change my CSC to Koodo. Since my phone is an unlocked version, I chose XAC which just means unbranded. I didn't choose KDO just to see if keeping it generic would work.

My phone auto factory reset on me, luckily I backed up last night with Smart Switch as I was going to go the sammobile route. As soon as I did an initial setup, my phone got an OTA to push the update right away. It seems my phone still being recognised with MTS was the issue, despite being unlocked, and MTS not updating their software as well I presume.

Thanks for all of your help though guys. Appreciate it. Maybe if anyone else ends up having this issue, you can recommend they check their CSC code to see if they're correctly set to KDO (or XAC in my case).

I'm glad the update finally went through. That's a pretty good tip Caerus and one I hadn't thought of, thank you for sharing.

I have a koodo Galaxy S7 Edge and my most recent software update was a security patch in April as well so I'm guessing that an update was pushed in July that was quickly halted due to issues and not pushed again or it just hasn't made it to our devices yet. Not a big issue just give it a little time and we will receive the July update Chadwick seems to have.

While that might be the case, the July update is only the most recent one. Koodo also had a June 8 update and most likely one in May as well. Your phone didn't receive a push for the previous updates either. If the July update was halted, you should have still received the June update by now.

Never even thought of it but I'm on Public Mobile with my Koodo/Telus S7 Edge so maybe I won't get updates unless I pull out my SIM Card. It shouldn't be though because my S6 and S6 Edge both received updates when Koodo updated their phones. If I have to remove my SIM Card to receive updates and my phone factory resets it's self every time I'm going to be pissed. I'll have to have a talk with Samsung about that if it's the case because that's bullish

Have you tried updating through the Smart Switch app, with your phone connected to your computer?

The only reason why my phone factory reset though, was because I changed the CSC from MTA to XAC. If you don't change/need to change your CSC code, your phone won't reset.

When I backed up everything with Smart Switch, after my phone was reset, I just loaded the backup file on again. All I had to do was reinstall 2 widgets and arrange app icons. My settings, apps, SMS, etc. were reinstalled, and still intact. It even put my wallpaper back.

You can always just check what your CSC code is. Go into your dialler and input *#272*yourIMEI# but don't install a new code. If it is KDO still, maybe just pull your SIM card, hook your phone up to your computer, and try the Samsung Smart Switch app. If your phone is recognised as KDO still it might push you the update. Maybe there's just some weird interference because your SIM is Public Mobile, but your phone is KDO.

But of course it's always a good idea to do a "just in case" backup with Smart Switch first before doing any updates.
