Unlocking older devices

I was thinking of a simpler way to unlock old Koodo/Telus/PM devices (cellphone activated prior to Oct 2017). A light App via "over the air carrier update", the App reads the IMEI and give the option to "Network Unlock" the device. It check the IMEI for : black list, official device status (not rooted or running custom ROM) and account in good standing.

Once the unlocking is DONE, the App remove itself from the device. Clean and safe; no delays and secure for all parties.

Telus/Koodo/PM is going to spend the time/money developing this app to make it easier for users to unlock Telus/Koodo/PM phones for free when they used to charge $50? They miss that money big time.

I doubt it.

you're right mate, in a few days Telus/Koodo are introducing a $30 "connection fees" for ALL new activations (BYOD or TAB) and ALL renewals (Upgrades).

They just find a way to recoup the lost on the "unlocking fees".

Which is waived if you do it online. Interesting choice but whatever.

but i'm pretty sure the Corpo people will still demand the same or higher quota of activation at the store level.

It sound like a "relative" of some VP or High level Management in the company "fresh out of business school" with ZERO store level experiences pulling those stupid policies out of where the Sun never shine.

Sad to say but from now on I'll get my new device on the web-store or from a 3rd party, my local store just miss out on 5 upgrades this summer + 5 case/screen (amazon or ally express).

Most phone can now be unlocked online via our Self Serve portal. No need for an app.:-)

Does it work doing it that way though Bernard? That would be the easiest and least hassle.

Some say it doesnt work or its disabled.

Yea it says "We're unable to unlock your device online. To unlock your device, please contact us by calling 1-866-995-6636. We recommend that you call using a different device than the device you want to unlock so we can assist you with the unlock steps."
Unless it's reading that my phone is already unlocked and that's why it won't let me access it?

Hmmm...thanks for the heads up guys, I just tried and something is up indeed. We’ll look into it.

Update: ok, just checked with a couple of my other lines and it works fine. I also looked and lots and lots of phones were unlocked online this week. There are a few parameters based one’s account that requires connecting with a rep and that is when that message is served up.
