Unknown data usage? Being charged.

I have noticed on my usage breakdown whenever I am OVER my monthly data limit every day I get consistent 10.0MB usage periodically (this equates to $0.50 each time and this clearly quickly adds up.)

I am not doing anything differently with my phone and these 10.0MB data usages don't show up at all when im not over my limit. This seems extremely fishy to me.

Has anyone else noticed this on their usage breakdown? Am I the only one? Can anyone provide insight?

Hi Xela,

If you have an android phone you are able to see which application is using what amount of data during a given period. In this same section, you are also able to place a data limit on your phone so that it automatically blocks the usage of data on your phone once you pass the set limit.

I understand I can view what application is using what amount of the total data. Is there a way to view what time of the day it is using data?

For me it seems strange that something is consistently using 10.0MB of data on the dot - every single time. Usually if an app is running background data it wouldn't be an even number. And like I said - these 10.0MB data charges only show up when I am over my data limit, not before.

When looking at Koodo usage chart for example it says:

10:15am - 10.0MB
10:15am - 10.0MB
10:15am - 10.0MB
10:15am - 10.0MB

These 10.0MB mysterious data usages only show up after I've hit my limit and incur a $0.50 charge each time. They are nowhere to be seen during my initial data allowance breakdown

PS: I understand I can set a data limit on my phone but that's not the resolution i'm looking for here.

Hey Xela,

Cellular Data travels over the network by breaking it up into small chunks called packets (this allows data to be transferred faster). If you were streaming a video or downloading a large file, your data usage will be displayed as you mentioned in the above example.

You can configure your phone to make sure it won’t use your cellular data when idle. If you let us know the phone model, we will be able to assist you further.

Thank you!

Thanks Tayeb. I still find it strange how only the 10.0MB packets show up after my monthly data allowance has been used up. Perhaps its just coincidence it's happening every month.

Thanks for your reply Xela, the last download (packet) should be smaller than 10MB as it’s usually the residual download. Customer Service cannot see your usage for privacy reasons but you can check which apps are using more data and configure your phone to avoid a potential unwanted usage.

As this is recurring case, I would recommend checking the settings to see if the phone allows background app refresh or automatic updates via the cellular network. You can also set a data limit depending on your phone.

As always if you need help, please let us know the phone model. We’ll be more than happy to assist you with that :)
