Unknown 474663 Txt Message sent by me

I just joined Koodo prepaid (using iPhone 5s, Talk and Data Addons) and I've seen 2 txt messages sent to "474663". They are appearing as "Talk" charges on my plan. I've only used 4 minutes of "Talk" time (rounded up to next minute for each call) but appears on my account that I have used 13 minutes. I'm thinking this "474663" txt might cost 5 minutes of "Talk" time which if true is really bad.
Anybody ever seen this before?

Never seen that before Fred.

Text messages can not count toward airtime usage! Are you sure you haven't used more minutes?

This is what I'm seeing on my account:

Date            Time                     Type Origin            Dest      Type
02/09/2016 1:09 AM Outgoing Text 613XXXXXX 474663  Minutes $0.00
02/09/2016 12:21 AM Outgoing Text 613XXXXXX 474663  Minutes $0.00

For most txt'ing the "Type" is appearing as "Text'. But, for these outgoing texts, (Short txts I believe they are called)...they are being treated as "Minutes" against my "minutes" addOn.

My plan has free unlimited txt'ing.

Is it possible to call Koodo to talk to them about this without being charged for support? Or, perhaps stop at a Koodo Kiosk?

Thanks

I've only had the phone 3 days. As mentioned, I've been charged 13 minutes on my "Talk" AddOn. but only used 5 minutes (Last 3 rows of billing):

The 1st 2 rows are the 474663 txt issue. Since I've only used 5 minutes of airtime minutes, I have to assume that the 2 txts are accounting for 8 minutes of airtime. (4 minutes each)

02/09/2016 1:09 AM Outgoing Text 613XXXXXXX 474663  Minutes $0.00
02/09/2016 12:21 AM Outgoing Text 613XXXXXXX 474663  Minutes $0.00

The only thing I can think of is that you called voicemail to record a message or something, could that perhaps be the reason?

Thx for the reply. No, it's something that's happening automatically. (Perhaps an installed app). The only app I've installed is the OOMA phone app. I'm uninstalling that now. I've also read some link that it could be related to iCloud but I don't think that is the case.

But, regardless, I'm wondering why txt messages like this appears as air time. If you are sending a txt....why does it appear as air time...Very odd.

Yes very strange indeed, I just looked at my own usage on prepaid and I see nothing of the sort. I would imagine that the OOMA app could have caused the issue, some VOIP apps dial a number in order to connect to another number. But as you said, then a number should have been displayed, not a short code...

Keep us posted, I'm interested if removing the app solved your problem :)

This thread on Public Mobile suggests it may be associated with setting up Messages (formerly known as iMessage) on your iPhone.

Since you indicate you are new to Koodo, and have an iPhone, have you set up Messages on your phone?

It may have something to do with Visual Voicemail as well - see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1041702&page=9 for discussion.

It is the number used for activating iMessage. The number corresponds to dialing "iPhone" = 474663.

So, can anyone tell me why it appears as a "voice" type on my bill rather than "SMS"?. And, on a prepaid plan, how many minutes does it account for since there are no minutes associated with it on the billing record. Very odd!
Is there a way to speak with a Koodo rep without being  charged (I'm seeing it costs $10.00 to call them LOL)

It's not billed as an SMS, because it isn't one. There are a number of electronic transactions which need to occur behind the scenes to set up Messages, including relating the number to your iTunes ID if provided, and confirming the number is an iPhone. Once your Messages App is activated, there should be no more of these transmissions, and all the other Messages you send will be either on cellular data or Wi-Fi.

Thanks a lot for that great info. Do you happen to know if there are charges by Koodo (in terms of minutes against talk addons) for making the 474663 text?

As mentioned, I've only used 5 minutes of talk time (rounded up to next minute for each call), but, my account is showing as 31 minutes used. Is it possible that the 2 474663 txts (which were treated as voice calls) are being charged to me as 13 minutes each (ie (31-5)/2))

13 minutes X 2 = 26 minutes (possible talk charge for 474663 txt)
Plus, the 5 actual talk minutes
= 31 minutes

The number of minutes shown as having been consumed on your account should not be continuing to grow (was 13 now 31) without additional transactions showing.

Problem solved. The problem is the Koodo usage website provides a sort feature. But, in order for the sort feature to include ALL records, you must page through all your records first.
This is a bug with the site in my opinion and is very misleading.
So, after I paged through all my usage records, I sorted by "Type" and found I had much more voice usage than expected.
After doing the math, Koodo is charging me the correct minutes. They are not charging me for the iMessage txts which is good news.

Thank you all for your comments!

Good to hear it's sorted. iMessage activation shouldn't be charged if the carrier is an official iPhone distributor. When I was with Wind, iMessage activation was charged due to the message being considered a premium SMS.

We all love a tough problem :) Glad you figured it out!
