I've been thru these hoops with Chromecast, Roku and at least 6 different phones and tablets.

Unless the app supports Chromecast in its menus (Youtube, Netflix, PBS and others), you can only watch on the device itself.

There is no way to cast others such as Free Range or TMN GO regardless of what phone or tablet you use. You will get an error message on your TV having to do with copyright arrangements allowing playback only on your original android device.

It was possible with free range tv until a couple of weeks ago. Then they updated the app. It is now no longer allowed.

Yeah. It used to work. I specifically bought a higher-res tablet to mirror a better quality screen to my TV. We've gone from half a loaf to none.

Lesson to be learned: sometimes it's best to freeze things in time when they work by not allowing automatic app updates on a particular device. Newer is not always better.

So casting the device itself no longer works for those apps? Once you bring the app up it'll just lock out?

Correct, although I can only speak for the freerange tv app. Sportsnet Go still worked last time I tried mirroring it.

Alright, time to find the .apk for the last version that still allowed it. Or is it that 6.0.1 has it integrated now making the cast app extraneous? Looks that way on my Nexus 7.

Since Shaw purchased Wind mobile you'll probably have to be a wind subscriber to use it like alot of the other mobile TV apps such as Rogers. I was a Rogers cable sub but since I didn't use Rogers mobile I couldn't use their mobile TV service, I can see Shaw going in this direction with it to attract more users to their new mobile carrier.

That was one of their stated aims whe the purchase was announced: to also offer bundling services.

It's the Shaw apk. Rolling back does the trick.

Ok great thank you how do you roll back the app and stop it from updating?

If you don't have the .apk file of the older version that doesn't do it, you will have to find it online via third party options. There's sites with older versions of many apps stored. Check for any obvious signs of it being malware and I would install malware bytes or avg to scan the downloaded file before installing it. You will need to first uninstall the newer version. Also you would go into Google play store to change the auto update option.

apkpure.com is a good point of departure. You will need an app like apk installer on your device.

Download the .apk you need into your device's Download folder, then tap to install. Hang on to your older .apk since that version will get overwritten if you update from play store.

Despite your best efforts, going from an S3 to a large screen may present some irreconcilable frame skipping and audio sync issues, but it costs you nothing to try.
