Your best option is probably to get your phone unlocked and get a prepaid sim in Italy as roaming is quite expensive.
1. Make sure your phone supports the network frequencies that are used in Italy
I haven't been to Italy so I'm not too familiar with the carriers there and prepaid plans but a bit of research on google should help. Maybe someone else on this forum that has been to Italy can help you out better. :)

Buying right at airports i find is the best. Saves a ton of time and chances of someone speaking english are much better. :-) If you fly into Rome this is a good description of all you need.
