My wife and I share a Koodo account. When travelling in Italy with our two cell phones, will we still be able to text  (or call) each other without having to purchase an add-on for international travel?

Unfortunately not. The unlimited calling only applied while within Canada. You can do the pay per use rates but they're even more expensive. You can always get a local prepaid Sim if you'll need more than the bare minimum.

Thanks. you confirmed what I suspected. Since we will be travelling for 4 weeks in Italy I now plan to pay the $50 to unlock my phone and purchase a SIM card (when we arrive in Florence) through Vodaphone's Holiday offer (30 euros - activation and SIM card included: 300 minutes to all Italian numbers and calls to Canada, 300 SMS - Italy and Canada, 2 GB data). My wife will purchase the $15 Koodo international travel add-on offering 75 outgoing texts over a 30 day period. So that way if separated we can still keep in touch.

Unless you have an iPhone it will be much cheaper to get sn unlock code from a third party. I personally use a combo of good price and feedback from eBay.

FYI you can receive texts for free still while roaming.
