I am travelling to China for 10 days with my iphone  Is it better to get phone unlocked and get a sim card there or pay for a datacalling plan from Canada I plan to call home and use email only

I'm not too familiar with China, but if it is easy to get a local SIM card there, it would be MUCH cheaper to do so. What phone do you have? Koodo will unlock for $35 but it might be cheaper to use a third party unlock service :)

If you have an android, then definitely get it unlocked from a third party on ebay or elsewhere. An iPhone if from Koodo then get it from Koodo, it will be cheaper. You will need to get a Sim from Unicom, as it'd the only non cdma carrier atm for 3G. They all have lte. You can fin full details here:

Koodo's international plans are now apparently limited to 30 days only. By many measures not a very good fit for many.

Unlock your phone and get a SIM card from either China Unicom or China Mobile. China Unicom is recommended as their 3G is WCDMA. Your phone may not be compatible with China Telecom service. They are a CDMA carrier.
