Do you know what file format the music is in? Are they MP3s?

Also, are you transferring the files by drag & drop from the phone to the PC, or using a program like Samsung Kies?

Is your S3 connected via PTP or MTP? Make sure that it's MTP. When you connect it via USB, swipe down from the top of the screen. Make sure it says "Connected as a media device". If it says "Connected as a camera", tap on it and then select MTP.

I'm running Windows 8.1 and using a Galaxy S4 (sorry, no S3 to try it with):

If you haven't upgraded to Windows 8.1 then I highly recommend that you do so. It's got some major improvements (and they've brought back the start button). Make sure Windows is up to date and then the free upgrade will be visible in the store.
