Some phones limit it to 140 but the norm is 160.
You'll usually know if your phone switches to "2/2" in the corner somewhere as u type if you get past 140 or 160 depending on your device..

That's what my phone does after 140 which is why I thought that was the limit :P

Is it phone dependent? I always thought it was carrier dependent

It depends character set being used for the messages. The maximum payload for the system used to send sms messages is 140 8-bit characters, 160 7-bit characters or 70 16 -bit characters. If long messages are split into multiple sms messages, the number of available characters per segment is lower: 153 for 7-bit encoding, 134 for 8-bit encoding and 67 for 16-bit encoding, since the information about the proper order for the messages has to be sent as part of the message.
Now you know :-)

I have another detail to this story...

"Is there a word count limit to SMS. I have a friend who sends me long written messages some times. They always arrive in parts, nice little chunks of words, but not in chronological order. I have to twirl them around in my head to go from beginning to end. They make for nice word puzzle but they do intrigue me...

Any idea why this happens... two receiving towers retransmitting at the same time maybe at her end?? "

Some phones will break up a message that is over 160. Sometimes, this can result in messages being sent out of order. I suggest staying under 160 to avoid things like this.
