Just got the email:

"Get 10% off your monthly base plan when you sign up for automatic top-ups!

Once you've registered for automatic top-ups, 10% will be taken off the cost of your base plan when you renew it next month, and every month after that for as long as you keep automatic top-ups on your account - it's that simple!"

THANK YOU once again for being so generous towards us prepaid users :)

What? My plan renewed *today* and I did not get that e-mail???

I didn't get that e-mail either. I'm already on auto top up though. Maybe it's just to get people on it?

I'm not sure, Brian. I just noticed something I had not noticed in my enthusiasm this morning: my husband and I each have an account, and only one of the two accounts received the email, the other did not (yet). Perhaps the sending of emails is throttled, or it's only sent to specific addresses... and I still don't know if you need to re-apply for automatic top-up to qualify for the 10% or if it is automatically applied to all customers. No news from Koodo yet either so hoping for more answers soon :)

People who did not receive the e-mail seem to have in common the fact that they were already on automatic top-ups. That may be why.

Guess I'll just have to disable top up, and sign up for it again. Anything for a buck. well, three bucks, a month :-)

That doesn't sound like koodo. For monthly customers when they dropped prices for one of their plans they sent a text if you were already with them to say that you get the deal as well.

So, is there a definitive answer if those *already on* auto top-up will receive the same 10% off starting next month?

I see that same message, and am curious if we have to deactivate the auto top-up and reactivate it to ensure the 10% applies?

How did it work, Ray? Did your credit card get charged less, or did you get the 10% in credit?

I got a 10% credit, so my account now has a balance of $1.50. I suppose that means they won't charge my credit card when the credit balance reaches $15 after 10 months.

Interesting!!! So in a way you're building up credit to buy a data booster after 20 months :) I wonder what would happen if you auto top-up with $5 - do you still get the $1.50 or would it drop to $0.50? It's so new I still have many questions :D

We seem to be getting MANY more threads/questions/ideas about prepaid recently, as if prepaid users were silent in the past, or if there was a recent surge in popularity... Anyone have input on this? I'm just wondering! In any case, I'm happy to see more people realizing the value they're getting :oD

So, my plan renewed today. The $1.50 was added as credit to my account :)

A lot has already been said and confirmed in this thread, but in summary, this is how it works:

- You need to cancel automatic top up if you're already using it, and then reactivate it. This will trigger the 10% discount.
- The 10% is applied as credit, not a discount. So if you auto top up with $15, your credit card is charged $15 (plus tax), and after the top up you'll have a positive balance of $1.50 in your account.
- You can auto top up with any amount, even $5 to get the full 10%. I tested this by manually topping up with $10 yesterday and then setting automatic top up to $10. I was curious to see if I'd get a $1 (10% of the auto top up amount) or $1.50 (10% of base plan) credit, I got the full $1.50. I now have a positive balance of $6.50.

So you can set automatic top up to $15 and save it up for boosters (e.g. you can get a data booster after 20 months for "free") or choose a lower amount as auto top-up but obviously you'd still need to manually add vouchers or funds once in a while. I don't think setting automatic top-up with a higher amount than your base plan has any advantage, the 10% seems to only apply to the base plan amount.

Hope that helps and I'm grateful to Koodo for this small perk :)

Well the whole point of this was so that you can have the best of both worlds... $5 top up with $1.50 bonus PLUS no tax vouchers :) It's up to you Budd but I am still going to flag your post with Koodo since we (mobile masters) did get official word at the time that you can auto top up ANY amount to qualify. If this has changed since, I think it's important we are informed about that too :)

When I called in, she thought that it was their error and that was why she gave me the $1.50. She called me back and told me the problem was the amount of the CC auto top up but left the $1.50 on this time but put a note on my account regarding the problem with the amount of top up.

I'm sure we'll get official word soon, I posed the question to our liaison at Koodo, Budd. We'll get to the bottom of this :D
Photo of Brian Paul

This is 10% of what you pay, put into an account for you. If you top up $5. Why would you expect to get $1.50? That would be 30%. At most, you should expect $.50
Plus, I believe it has to be an auto top up with a credit card.
Photo of Sophia

Sophia, Mobile Master

  • 142,984 Points 100k badge 2x thumb
You get 10% of your base plan, Brian, not 10% of what you top up. As I said before, official word was that you get the 10% no matter what amount you choose to auto top up with. If that has changed, we need to know. I can't emphasize enough that it worked for me when I tested it... I definitely got the $1.50 when the automatic top up amount was $10. Of course you need to have enough funds in your account to compensate.

Anyway it's no use speculating further until we hear back from Koodo... but it's weekend, so we'll probably have to postpone this conversation till the beginning of the week :)

Thanks for the heads up!!! Happy to save a little money by simply doing what I already do :)

Having switched to Koodo prepaid about 2.5 months ago I can't believe how well things here work -- and actually seem to get better along the way.

Thanks for this, 100%.

If you're on prepaid, you'll have the option (see post below).

If you're on monthly, then this is not applicable (there is another form of a 10% rebate for monthly users who use their own devices, i.e. No Tab).

One of my 3 handsets that have been doing auto-top up for 6+ months just renewed and I have the $1.50 balance left over, so all is looking good!

As was pointed out before, this is *not* a discount..it's just a credit that accumulates which can be redeemed at some point down the road...

Ok, just spoke to CS, manually credited back to my account, seems to be a known issue on their system. CS rep toggled the auto top up again, hopefully it will go through next month.

Same problem with one of my accounts as well. First month the $1.50 was added fine. The second auto-top up on April 11 and still at $1.50 - should be $3.00 balance. Grrr!

I have toggled my second account and hopefully that works in a couple of weeks. I will call in to make sure they credit it.

I think this "discount"/credit is a nice idea, but seriously, Koodo really needs to step up their IT and QA testing. Not trying to harp here, but it has been one thing after another with the prepaid online service since I joined last summer.

Or perhaps the "discount" was for us being beta-testers! ;-) Come on Tabador, enough already!

This is what it looks like, Chris. As you can see, the $1.50 is applied as credit.
Note that in February I auto topped up $10, the plan was renewed using $5 from the existing balance. The $1.50 was applied as credit.
In March, I had changed the auto top up amount to $15 and again, $1.50 was applied as credit. (Edit: oops, I did that after it renewed itself! So again, I was given $1.50 credit with just $10 auto top up).
Curious to see what will happen next week!

Is this 10% discount only applicable to credit card auto renewals? Or can I use my bank account for auto renewals & get the discount? I also have a visa debit card, but heard these aren't accepted?

Please let me know, my thanks in advance!

You can only use automatic top up using a credit card, not your bank account unfortunately :(
You could try your visa debit card, sometimes they are accepted but since they are limited, it might not be useful for a continuing top up arrangement... still... won't hurt to try :)

I never received my 10% auto top up credit so I called CS and they said that I only topped up $5 from my CC and $10 from my account balance but I should of auto topped up the entire $15 from my Credit Card, that was why I was not entitled to the discount. Go Figure!

Yes, or after you have reached over $5 in credit, you can lower your top up amount to $10 for the next month. You'll still get the 10% on the full $15.
