I have a friend who is travelling to the U.S. and I want to stay in touch by text here in Canada. I have the Canada-wide Talk and Text plan ($20 version-yess!) I just wanted to confirm that I'm not going to be charged extra for texts I send to him and receive from him while he is Stateside.

You will not be charged as your phone would still be in Canada when those texts are sent and received.

If your friend's number is a Canadian number, then it is included as part of your plan.

If your friend has a US number, then you need to check if you plan has International texting included. The current ones do include international texting, but I don't know about your $20 plan. If it is included, you can send/receive international texts without charge.

(In general, receiving a text message while in Canada is always free)

Thanks for the answers. I was pretty sure that they were free.

Never hurts to get assurances :)
