Texting without cell service

If I'm in an area that has no cell service but does have wifi can I send and receive texts.  Also will this use my data? My phone is a Samsung and I am in Alberta

If there is no cell network connection, you can't send/receive texts. Also, you can't access your mobile data.
But if you can somehow access to wifi, you can send/receive message through messaging apps like WhatsApp  or Messenger...etc.

Hi Lynn, you have no data access if you don't get coverage. You could, if possible, try to send texts or pics by apps like iMessage, Google Hangouts, WhatsApp or Line, as long as you have wifi. The only thing you need to know is the person you text must also have one of the apps listed above.

You can send SMS & MMS thru this app over wifi only:


Recipients don't need any special app, but reply to a phone number you get from Pinger, usually US based, though some areas in Canada are covered. Not entirely free, but I've used it often when my home cell service was down but landline wifi was OK.
