Texting in the U.S. I just activated the 10TXT texting plan. If I take my phone off Airplane Mode - is that ok? Will I be charged roaming fees if I receive emails on my phone. Or do I need add on a data plan?

You will definitely be charged if you use data for receiving emails... so you'd be best off to add a data roaming add-on, at least you'll know how much you will spend :)

You can add a data plan or simply turn off your data. To future proof yourself disable data when roaming on your phone to avoid pricey charges!

Thank you.  So if I just wish to text, I can turn off data and take off airplane mode?

Yes of course! As long as data is turned off you will not use it and incure any additional data fees.
