I currently have a contract with Telus and would like to switch to Koodo (since they are owned by Telus), would there be a penalty? If so, what would it be? How do I start the process? thxs

You would have to ask Telus if there's a penalty.

The process would depend on a few factors. Do you want to keep your number?

I doubt Telus would tell me since I'm sure they don't want to lose business even though they own Koodo. My guess is I'd still have to buy-out the remaining balance of my phone.
Keeping my phone number is a must as I've had it for over 10 years.

thanks for the quick reply!

hey JOhnny
the penalty will be from telus
you would have to get ahold of telus for that info

to move from telus to koodo
just simply go down to one of the koodo stores choose the phone you want ( you can even keep your telus phone and just get a koodo sim )tell them you would like to move the number from telus (be sure to have your telus account #)
they will get you all set up

They would tell you what the penalty would be.

To port your number over, you can do that during the activation of your Koodo account. Go to a Koodo Shop in your area.

The penalty will be one of two options depending on when you got your last phone/signed your last contract.

The newer way (in effect for about 2 years or so now) is the remaining device balance on your phone (shows at the top of page 3 of your bill) + $50. This varies with a few factors, the discount you received on the handset, along with the amount of months in your term.

If your bill doesn't show a device balance you are under the older rules.

$20 x amount of months remaining, with a minimum charge of $100 So with 10 months left that'd be $200, with 5 months or less left it's $100.

As mentioned to start the process head to where you want to get your Koodo phone from, but make sure to bring your Telus Account Number with you.

thanks all for the useful information!

My wife has about 12 months left on her current 3 year contract (she got a iPhone 4) and I just re-signed up for a 3 year contract with my iPhone 5.
I guess I'll have to wait a bit longer before making the switch!

thxs again

No problem, and yeah if I had to estimate (without seeing your bills), your device balance would be somewhere in the 450 range (so about $500 penalty) and hers would probably be in about the $150 range (or about a $200 penalty).

On a similar note, my Telus contract expires at the end of January, but I want to jump on the Christmas offers, can I get a koodo number for now and switch port my Telus one when my contract expires?

Thanks!
Do you think the unlimited everything + 2gb will be there or a similar variation will be there around Valentines? I don't know how seasonal cell offers work.

The best promos are usually around this time of year so if there's any specials around Valentine's day I doubt they'll be better than now.
