Telus offers a $7.00 per day add on for US travel that makes it the same as his current plan. Can you do the same?

Koodo plans to launch a Fido Roam-like roaming package later this year, according to an official response on the carrier’s community forum.

In a new post dated to Sunday, a Koodo customer suggests the carrier implement a Fido Roam/Roam like Home equivalent. Later in the thread, a spokesperson for the company notes the carrier will launch something like Fido Roam sometime in August or September.

A $7 per day add on would cost $210 extra per month for snowbirds .  Not practical or affordable at all for a post-paid customer. 

Better to put account on hold (reducing your post-paid account to $15 per month) and  get a pre-paid plan (another $15 per month) then buy chunks of messaging, calling and data as required.  $20 buys 1000 texts ($5 for 250 texts) $20 buys 250 USA and USA-Canada minutes and another $20 buys  500 mb of data.  Instead of paying $210 in additional to the cost of your current Koodo plan, you'd pay $30 per month for the two plans and, say, $60 for voice/text/data boosters.  That's less than half the price of the proposed plan without even considering the savings you net by putting your Canadian post-paid plan on hold..

These add-ons are for people who don't want to deal with the hassle of getting a new SIM card and a phone number.
They work very well for three kinds of people:
  1. People going on a short trip
  2. People going on a business trip and getting reimbursed by their employer
  3. The rich

They also work for someone who will go the whole month. They will e paying only 10 days for 30 days of coverage... Which is quite a good deal.

Yes, I discussed that in an earlier post, below.  The plan seems geared for customers planning a US trip that is significantly greater than 10 days and, if more than one month,  most of each additional month.  Otherwise, the current add ons or the prepaid options are better.

Depends entirely on how much you use your phone. If I use data at the same or greater rate than I do at home, pre-paid might be $60/month, before even adding voice or text.

It also might work well for a traveller who needs cellular connectivity for a day or so per month, such as when travelling to and from a destination.

He is an employee. What I am wondering is how many subscribers Koodo has. TELUS never tells them separately. Rogers does.

NJPB, I can't imagine how any Koodo employee would know how many customers fly south for part of the winter, especially if they find it cheaper to use a US service while visiting.

The only userbase that is growing that you can be sure of is the out-of-province plan people. The sad thing about it is that there are people buying this "service" for $100+ when they could do it for free.

@ Elinor, we live in the age of "big data". :-)  Multi month seasonal holds during  December-April are one sure way to narrow down the number.  Add to that some other layers and we get very close estimating that number.

Allen, thanks for the explanation of Fido Roam; much clearer than Mobile Syrup's.   Not Jean-Pierre Blais, I laughed at your third category of folks who would like Koodo Roam.  David, people who rarely use phones when travelling  are unlikely to want to pay the $50 cap for a couple of phone calls or checking their emails....

Koodo should do better than $50 extra for 10 days.  Currently,  for only $40, you can get 10 days of unlimited voice and messaging plus 250 mb of data with a US add on.  Unless you really NEED more data, why pay $10 extra if you're on a quick trip? 

If you're going for a trip lasting a month, their new proposal is worthwhile and cheaper than their 30 day US add on..  However, for longer trips, it is worthwhile to pay the set up costs for a pre-paid plan, buy the boosters and put your post-paid plan on hold.  You can save a lot of money.

My example:   Total cost of plan from November 24th to sometime in April  was $112.46 (tax extra). That's $25 per month.  Costs included: set up of the account, monthly billing and $45 in data, voice and messaging boosters.  Putting your postpaid account on hold saves you  another $25 -$54 per month ($40 - $69 postpaid plan reduced to hold price of $15) for duration of your trip.  Your total monthly cost will be about $40 (prepaid costs plus $15 hold on post-paid account),  not $90 -$119 per month (average range of plan costs plus the $50 cap).  There is plenty of room in this budget to buy more data/voice/messages as needed.  That's better than paying for monthly amounts you're unlikely to use up on vacation, especially with the prevalence of wifi hotspots in the US.

It was a hassle to get a Sim and new number for my old phone but it gave me control to use my phone the way I wanted: only calls in an emergency, lots of texting and data access when wifi was not handy.  I hope that Koodo will charge less than Fido for its US roaming plan, since the price is so out of whack with Koodo's own prepaid option. If I can save several $100s by getting another prepaid account next fall, I'll put up with the hassle.

I'm not really understanding why you'd put your post-paid account on hold, Elinor. If you are opening a Koodo prepaid account, just port your number to it, and re-open a fresh Koodo post-paid account when you return, and port your number back.

I've read comments here about difficulties porting numbers within Koodo and a brilliant Koodo customer rep found me a perfect number because it's the only mobile number I've ever remembered, lol!  Good idea though, David for others more intrepid than I. 

Also, Koodo sent me several promo offers to entice me to move from prepaid to post paid.  I was surprised at this because I already had my postpaid account.  Had I transferred my number and closed my account, I would have been able to get a deal upon return. (Not to mention avoid the extra $15 per month to keep the postpaid account alive......)
  Maybe I should look into this for next year.  Thanks!

If you used $45 in US boosters over a 5 month period, you are an extremely light user. In the time you were a snowbird, you used less than half a GB of data, 250 minutes of voice, and 1000 texts. This is an exceeding frugal use pattern, and your cost is less than even having a US SIM would be. The $5 ($7) plans are meant for folks who use their phones as they do at home, likely consuming more than a GB of data per month, and many minutes and texts. I suggest that the way you currently manage you phone while in the USA is the cheapest you will see, no matter how you manage your plan choices. However, I doubt your use pattern is anywhere near the average for travelling users of smartphones, and not the pattern carriers would design their offerings for.
