I have been called a few times by people who say they are calling back a pesky telemarketer. It's not me. Can a company have commandeered my number without my knowledge?

No, that's odd.

To block unwanted calls I recommend:
If you're using Android - Call Control or Extreme Call Blocker from the Google Play Store
If you're using a Blackberry - Call Control from the Blackberry App World.

Well I don't think it is legal but it's not that hard to spoof a callerID number. So it may be the caller ID would display your number and they would call you. If your not too attached to the number you might be able to get Koodo to change it. Other than that I don't think there's a lot you can reasonably do, unfortunately.

This assumes that you have had the number for a while and that people are not just misreading the number. I used to get confidential faxes for a doctor's office because my fax number was close.

Sometimes the telemarketer will leave a number to reach them that differs from the caller ID. You might be able to ask when someone complains to you what the other contact number is, but I'm guessing they're not in a great mood at that point. Have you been able to figure out what the telemarketer is selling?

Remember that some of these guys simple use program to generate phone numbers. Then they put it on what they call a "dialler" to call the number. When they have a connection the go into their spiel.
