Taxes in the NWT

Okay so I recently moved from NB to NWT and updated my billing info. There were no local numbers available cause Koodo does not sell phones in the North. I said can I keep my old number then, they said yes. So I get my bill and they are charging me NB sales tax of 13% plus the $0.75 911 fee. NWT sales tax is 5% and there is no 911 service available in NWT. They told me I have to pay NB tax cause thats where I set up the account BS!! This is Tax Fraud plus the 911 fee. Bell mobility lost a class action lawsuit over the 911 fees being charged to residents of all the territories. Koodo is about to lose a 3 yr long customer if they continue this and I will start my own class action lawsuit. I'm sure I'm not the only one being over charged for taxes. Anybody else being over charged taxes on their bills?

This is definitely worth looking into, but it's not the same thing as the Bell situation. Bell was charging the 911 fee to residents of that province who actually had cell #s there but couldn't use the service. You kept your old NB #, which is why the taxes come from there. Now I understand that in your case, since you can't get a NWT number, you wouldn't be able to realistically change that, but I feel like some type of workaround is in order here. We'd need a Koodo rep to help us out here.

I personally would think that either you bite the bullet and pay it or you cancel your service since your saying service is not offered there, so basically if you want service you are the one creating your own workaround not koodo and as such you have to pay what you do to make "your" workaround work.

You're being charged NB taxes because you have an NB number. Taxes depend on your phone number and not where you set up your account nor the billing address. Just change your number to an Albertan number and pay 5% tax (+ $0.44 911 fee the Alberta government is imposing) since you're already long distance for those living in the NWT anyway. Nunavut or Yukon numbers would work too if they're available. OR you might be able to get an NWT number from another provider (hint: TELUS) and port it into your Koodo account.

It doesn't work like that. If a number isn't available somewhere in Koodo's service area (NWT, for example) and you try to port it, it says not eligible.

Do you want to try? If it's available on TELUS, it can be ported to Koodo.
Actually, I've just looked at available numbers from my Koodo and TELUS accounts and both show the same NWT numbers available. I don't understand why they said there were no NWT numbers to Paul Badgley.

When I moved Telus was not available in the NWT. Only recently did the start offering service in the NWT but only local numbers from Yellowknife.

You also said you "recently" moved to NWT. TELUS started offering service in NWT in September, 2013. So I don't really understand how long you mean by "recently".

The phone number is not my issue, it's the tax. I like keeping my old number so family can call me without incurring LD charges. There is a 8% difference that adds up to almost $5 per bill. When I was in Alberta a while back and moved to NB they weren't long changing from 5% to 13% after I updated my billing inf but now it seems like pulling teeth to get them to correct this issue.

Did you change your number when you moved from AB to NB? If you did, that's why the tax percentage changed.

I'm sure that taxes depend on the phone number because I have/had a lot of lines with TELUS and as soon as I changed the number to another province, taxes and province specific fees changed no matter what the billing address was.

It has been over a year since I moved, I never really noticed the taxes because I get E-billing and auto pay the bill on a CC. I bought a new phone in May and decided to check my bill for my tab balance and new charges and that's when I noticed the tax error, so for over a year I have given Koodo over $60 in extra taxes. That's my fault nothing I can do about that. I call CS and the CSR said I had to continue to pay the NB tax cause that is is where I bought the phone.

Change your phone number and tax percentage + region specific fees will change accordingly. It doesn't matter where you bought the phone. I don't think it's possible to override taxes, so you'll either change your phone number or keep paying more taxes and fees.

These are always special situations like this one but I'm sure Koodo is charging you what they're legally required to. Taxes/'fees' are associated with your phone number. AB has a recently new '911' fee regulated by the government and most likely NB has a similar law.

If you personally don't think you should be charged this, you should call Koodo at *611 from your Koodo phone and speak with a rep and they can help you out/explain things to you.

Honestly though, threatening a class action law suit won't do anything.

I think that in this particular instance, there should be an exemption to the 911 fee for those that reside in the Northwest Territories. The North does not have an official 911 service in place as of yet, so it wouldn't make much sense to pay for a service that essentially doesn't exist, let alone pay for another provinces' 911 service fees, no matter how infinitesimal the cost.
