currently with telus and considering moving to koodo. If I were to bring my existing phone to koodo, would they put it on a tab to essentially clear my balance with telus?

No. Koodo does not buy out contracts, even from telus. If you cancel telus service you would be responsible for any fees.

Koodo will not buy out your contract with telus. You can port in your telus phone number if youd like to - which will automatically cancel your Telus Account (but any cancellation fees will be on your next bill) just bring your Telus phone and the ACCOUNT number or PIN number. :)
Then when you sign up with Koodo and use your UNLOCKED Telus phone (some phones are pre-unlocked to Koodo - ex: some iPhones, s3) you just purchase a post paid sim card ($9.99+tax) and you can either take 10% off your bill each month or gain 10% towards a +$150 TAB so if you decide to upgrade to a Koodo phone, you can get a discount on the handset in the future.
