Sudden Spike in the Data Usage Rate on My Phone?

My phone has suddenly started using waaaay more data than it has ever used before when I have my data connection turned on. I used to only use about 20-50 MB per week, but now it has started saying I'm using 300-400 MB per day. I am already up against the ceiling on my usage, and I haven't even had the data connection on for 1 total hour. I'm not doing anything different on my phone that would cause the data usage to change so drastically, I'm only using the browser and Facebook app casually for a few minutes a day, I'm visiting the same sites, etc., so what could be causing it?

Could be a software update attempting to be pushed through your data plan. Go to Settings > About Phone > Software Update and make sure it's either up to date or on WiFi only.

Then check your Google Play settings. Go to the Play Store > Settings > check Auto-update apps on WiFi only or manually.

Then go to Settings > Data Usage and scroll down. See what the offending apps are. That will help you narrow it down.

Where did you see that you're going up in data use? Was it the built-in app or was it on Koodo's Self Serve?

The data was going up on my phone itself, and also on my Koodo usage page. I'll try what you suggested, but all the usage page on my phone (in the Setting menu, under where you turn the data connection on and off) will say is that the browser or Facebook is using so-and-so-many MB, not exactly what it's using them for, which is confusing to me, because I've been using those same apps and they haven't ever require those high amounts of data before.

Are you watching more videos ppl have posted? Videos take a large portion of data and Facebook is to introduce videos that play automatically so it could be that. I'm on the alpha version of Facebook so I'm not sure if they have brought that to the public version you would have or not but go into the app settings from within the Facebook App and look for a check box to only let it do this over wifi not data. You may not have it on your version of the FB app but it's worth a check.

Thank You for very useful information, checked it all on my phone and WiFi Only was checked in each case, still used 10MBs 10 times at same time. Same thing happened twice last month.
