Some iphone dummy questions

For Christmas my son gave me an iphone he got from a friend. He said he thinks it is an iphone 3 or 3s. I know nothing about smartphones and am over 50 lol! My questions are: how do I know what kind of iphone it is and if it is compatible with Koodo? On the back it says 16GB but doesn't say anything like iphone 3. Also, he said his friend was with Fido, but he doesn't know if the phone is locked. How do I know. When I turn it on, it just tells me that it needs a sim card. Any help educating this dummy mummy would be appreciated.

If it has a silver band around the screen and has a heavy plastic backing, then it's probably a 3G or 3GS. If it is more squared off on the edges and has a glass backing with a metal strip around the phone then it's a 4 or 4S.

Either way, Koodo does indeed sell the iPhone and so one from an outside source would still work but it would have to be unlocked first. Since its originally from Fido, more than likely it still has to be unlocked. There's only one way to test this out, really.

If you have a SIM card in your current phone (please tell us which one it is) then you should be able to take it out and put it in the little tray on the side of the iPhone that pops out with a paper clip. If you don't have a SIM card in your current phone then go to your nearest authorized Koodo retailer or Koodo shop and have them help you out getting one.
