Hi Tom

There are several prepaid providers in Canada and it's up to you want you want. Koodo's is slightly unique in that you pay a base fee of $15 per month, for which you get unlimited international (!) texting.
For phone calls or data you need to buy a voice or data booster. The largest boosters are the best value: $25 gives you 500 minutes and $30 gives you 1GB of data.

All other providers are more conventional in that you top up a certain amount ($10 per month is usually mandatory, or $100 which is valid for a year). Then you just start calling or you can buy a monthly ration of data, usually $10 for 100MB.

If you need to call to the UK Koodo is definitely your best bet, it only costs $0.25 (with the biggest booster) whereas with most others you pay through the nose, or will need to use VOIP.

Check out the websites of Telus, Rogers, Virgin and of course Koodo to get an idea as I could explain everything, but let's have you do some homework too :)
