Samsung Galaxy S II X randomly turning off and freezing

So about a week ago, my phone has been doing weird stuff by its self lately. So what happens is that sometimes when I unlock my phone, the phone would freeze and when I touch the screen, the screen would not respond. When this happens, I press the power/lock button to lock the device. Doing this results in the phone turning off by its self and I would have to press and hold the power button for 5-10 seconds for it to turn on again. I have done a battery pull a few times when this had happened, but problem is still not solved. My phone is not rooted and all apps I have installed are safe. Please help me with this problem.

Are you using the stock launcher or have you installed a third-party launcher or lock screen? (i.e. GO Launcher, Nova Launcher, GO Locker). I tend to do away with live wallpapers and run with just a static black background, dull I know, but it saves a little bit of memory. Try uninstalling the most recent app installed and see if that resolves the problem, it may be a safe app, but even safe apps are prone to glitches.

Hi there Denn... I will suggest to start doing a clean up on your phone, delete everything that you don't need, if you have photos and music, put it on the SD card to free the internal memory, remember to use the Task Manager to kill those apps running on the back ground.... If by doing this still the same problem I will suggest you to back up all your info in a safe place, once you have all the info safe in another place, do a factory reset on your phone and start fresh... I guess this should solve the issue...

I have the same phone, so far is working fine, I restart my phone let's say twice a month since tends to lag a bit with the time...

I hope this helps a bit, it the problem still persists and you think is not normal, you can always use your warranty, that's why you have one...

I am currently using Nova Launcher with the stock lock screen. I am not using a live wallpaper

I'm using Next Launcher on mine, had a couple of issues with Nova, experimenting with different launchers can't hurt.

Have you checked the reviews of Nova for your specific device? Check them out and see if maybe Nova doesn't play nice with your model. Does it do it when using the stock launcher?

I use Lightning Launcher on mine, didn't like the nova launcher at all. Found it lagged more than anything. I like LL better because I can customize my icon sizes and what not. I find there are more options with LL.

Also make sure your doing what Camilo said and that you aren't letting too many apps stay running in the background by actually closing them. Do this by holding down the Home button on the phone till a list of apps pops up, when the list of apps has popped up then flick them left born right to close them when they disappear off the screen they are then closed and not until then. Make sure you do this fairly often don't let too many apps run in the background because they will take up RAM and this would cause your phone to freeze up and even restart it's self because the RAM isn't overly large in the Galaxy S2X, it's not bad at all but it's not like the newer Android devices now that have 2gb of RAM. If your not be doing a this then I really think that's your issue. Try to keep it around 4 or 5 apps for the best performance.

I've been experiencing the same issues. I recently upgraded to a Samsung S 2 X (refurbishment) and I've had nothing but problems. I can't even adjust the volume without it freezing. The only way to fix it was to restart the phone.

I've factory reset twice, as well as formatted the SD card twice. I've also upgraded to the latest android Jellybean version from the Samsung website. I too thought the launcher was the issue, so I installed GO Launcher, but it was only a temporary fix. Within hours, I was having the same problems.

A friend of mine also has the same model of phone that he bought from Koodo, and he has had no problems. I spoke to a Koodo rep today, and he said that it sounds like it could be bad RAM or a motherboard, so I'm ordering a new phone. I would suggest taking it back. There's no reason why it should act up that much out of the box. Another friend of mine has a Galaxy Ace refurb and it outperforms my S II X

Started experiencing the same issue with the phone just shutting down on its own four days ago. I called Koodo three days ago and they made arrangements to send me a new battery to see if that will correct the problem. Still waiting. In the meantime, it shut down once last night (battery level at 35%) and THREE times since early this morning (battery levels at 20%, 84%, and 76%)! I called and reported these issues to Koodo so they have a record. I'm waiting to try the new battery and hoping that it fixes it. But I think there is an issue with this phone based on similar issues reported by others from different providers.

I just got this "new" phone in late July to replace an Blackberry Curve that I was very happy with. Very disappointed with this one so far.

I'm having the same issue. It will happen at the most random times, and it typically takes several (3-5) restarts to get it working properly again. I'm attempting to move my pictures and music onto my sd card, but I'm having a lot of trouble doing this due to the fact that my phone randomly crashes. This problem has been happening for a while now, but until yesterday it wasn't as severe as it is now. I t took me 21 restarts to finally get the phone to stay stable yesterday. Right now, this problem is also affecting some of my apps (mainly facebook messenger.) I am also unable to send or receive any text messages. (this started yesterday after getting the message memory full error) Also, any time I restart the phone, it will take anywhere from 5-10 minutes to boot up. Is there anything that I can do to fix this, or should I just get a new phone?

Your best option, once you've backed up all your info is to do a factory reset on the S2x. Go to Settings > Back up and reset and select Factory data reset, tap Reset device.

Hopefully that will work. Might be a while before I'm actually able to do this though :( (kies is being the usual piece of crap that it is)

So I'm having yet another issue with my stupid phone. The factory reset isn't doing anything. I've formatted the USB storage, but that didn't really do anything. All the problems I was having before are still happening, and literally nothing has changed, despite the fact that I told the phone to erase everything about 5 times now. Is there any other possible fix for this or should I just get a new phone?

It's still under the manufacturers warranty, so you could send it in for repair. We can also try a different method of hard resetting your S2x to see if that helps. I was going to suggest rooting the device, but since you're within the one year warranty period, I'll scrap that idea as it would void your warranty.

What's the different method of hard resetting my device? Hopefully this way will work better than a normal factory reset.

Turn off your S2x. Remove the battery and re-install battery. Leave battery door off so that you can quickly remove the battery and re-start the process below if necessary. Do not turn the S2x on.

Press and hold both the Volume up/down buttons while pressing and holding the Power button, in that order. Let go of the Power button when you feel a slight vibration, but continue holding the Volume up/down buttons until you arrive at the Android system recovery menu (blue text). Let go of the Volume up/down buttons.

Use the Volume up/down keys to scroll to the "wipe data/factory reset" option and use the Power button to select. You'll be taken to a secondary menu to confirm your selection. Scroll down to "delete all user data" and select with the Power button.

Let the S2x do it's thing. When complete, press the Power button to "reboot system now". That's it. Your S2x is factory reset.

Might be easier to see it than read it. Let go of the power button after it vibrates, but keep holding volume buttons.

Can someone help me? My phone randomly restarted by itself and when it came on I have these words on my screen and can't get rid of them. I took the battery out and restarted phone and I also did a factory reset and it did nothing. How do I get rid of this?

Hi Patricia,

The only way around this is to 'flash' or reload the phones original firmware to your S2x. You will have to register with SamMobile in order to download the firmware. Registration is free and so is the firmware download. You will need to download Odin, a utility used to transfer the firmware to your phone.

Once you've registered, navigate to the Firmwares tab and enter the phones' model number in the box that says 'Search device here...' The model number of your S2x is SGH-T989D. Look for 'Canada (Koodo Mobile) (Black Edition), Android version 4.1.2 dated March 2013. Tap the square orange Kies logo to the far right to begin downloading the firmware.

While the file downloads, click on the blue SGH-T989D link on the left to bring up instructions on how to unpack and install the firmware. (Click on images to enlarge).

Finally, if you don't want to go through all of this technical stuff, I would suggest looking at either the Moto G or the Nokia Lumia 635. I still have my S2x, but it is an older device and prone to glitches like this. I think you may be happier with a more reliable device.

I have both the Moto G and Lumia 635 and they're amazing in terms of performance, and reliability. For the price, you can't go wrong there either. It might be worth looking in to, just some suggestions.

Nokia Lumia 635 - WindowsPhone, 8 GB, external storage up to 128 GB
