Samsung Galaxy S4 4.4.2 Connectivity Issue!

I am using an Unlocked Samsung Galaxy s4. Model SGH-1337M. It was working completly fine on Android 4.3. But since i updated it to Android 4.4.2 last month I have been experiencing network issues. I am not sure if this problem is phone related or network related. I contacted samsung and they said they havnt recieved this complaint from anyone and said to try to change SIM cards. I experiencex some other laggs and bugs when i initially updated to 4.4.2 but those were eliminated after i performed a factory reset on the device. Only the connectivity issue remains. I will describe the issue in detail below.

When the phone is sleeping sometimes the network bars on the phone go to zero and the phone doesnt notify of having 0 bars or no connection but it seems as if the phone thinks there is network but calling/texting doesnt work. even when i go into settings to search for network it just stays frozen and also if i try changing network mode the settings dont change anything. The only solution that works is that i restart my device and i get the network bars again. There is no specific region this happens at. This is giving me major problems because I dont know when there is network and when there isnt unless i wake up the phone and check if there are barsm So i cant gurantee myself to recieve calls or texts while the phone is sleeping without verifying it every time.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? What can I do to fix it? Any help is appreciated.

I can show a screenshot of how the network bars are 0 if needed.

I can't say I've experienced anything like this myself nor have any of my customers reported anything to me... but you could try asking Koodo for a $10 bill credit, then go to a kiosk that sells postpaid and buy a new SIM for your phone ($10 + tax) to see if that makes a difference in your service. It could be scratched up, worn out, or simply a dud.

YES! My phone just started doing this 10 days ago.Nobody can not reach me, my phone didn't even ring. I didn't get any texts either. It's so stressful when you're waiting for a very important call. Please advise how to fix this issue.

See my post on the second page. It should "fix" the problem until another update comes out. I also like Amuk Sandhu's suggestion about a custom update.

I don't have a SIM Card in my S4 right now so not sure exactly the wording they use but basically go into settings - more networks - mobile networks - and turn off LTE so it's running on HSPA Only and see if that does anything.

My S4 has started taking an hour to recognize a change in network. This started before the kit kat upgrade. Rogers says it is a phone defect.

Hi. Rogers is wrong. It is not the phone defect. It's the Android 4.4.2 and there are a lot of bugs in 4.4.2. I have similar issue and what I do is to restart my phone and everything went to normal.

Thanks guys for the replies. I considered Paul's advice and changed my network mode to "WCDMA only" since about 2-3 days and I haven't experienced this problem again so far. I do loose the "LTE" connectivity with this and mobile data runs on a 4G network. I will let you guys know if it happens again under this setting.
Thanks!

YES! My phone just started doing this 2 days ago. My teen was at work calling for a ride home and my phone didn't even ring. I didn't get any texts either. Everyone and their brother was calling me but my phone didn't ring. I had no bars. I called Tmobile and they told me to switch my network from LTE/WCDMA/GSM (auto connect) to WCDMA/GSM (auto connect) while they work on the connection issue for 72 hours. All seemed fine. I woke up this morning to make a call and it wouldn't go through. NO BARS! Checked my network connection and none of the options were selected. I restarted my phone and bars were back. So it's losing connectivity for some reason. $650 phone! I am so aggravated! Never had this problem before installing 4.4.2 Kitkat!

I am now post KitKat upgrade and have tried moving the connect choice to without the LTE option. Problem NOT resolved.
Rogers has sent me a refurbished phone. Better than nothing I suppose although I see it as the equivalent of a used car.
Early next week I will test the refurb where it will have to change provider and change back and see what happens.

As far as your issue maybe it's with Rogers as I never had good experiences with them personally it was nothing but problems. I switched to Koodo and haven't had a single issue, heck I've never ever even had to call customer service or return anything at all in 3 years with Koodo.

I have the same issue in Singapore. Leaving the phone on 'WCDMA' mode only resolves the issue but whats the point of paying so much more for the LTE subscription and LTE handset if I can only use it on WCDMA mode? this is frustrating. if anyone knows the resolution to this issue, please let it be known.

The issue might be due to the (auto connect) options in 4.4.2

I am having this same issue on T-mobile with my S4 since the kitkat update. I don't want to have to sacrifice LTE connectivity... is there a better fix for this?

Stupid Tmobile told me again over the weekend that they are not aware of any problem such as this with the 4.4.2 and that all bugs were fixed in March. Well I didn't download it until April! I told them about this site and several others proving it is not just a t mobile issue. They told me I have to factory reset my phone. Now I have to back up all my apps, pictures, and texts with another app. Then reset my phone. Use it for 2 days before adding in any apps, one at a time, for a couple days each. They want to make sure the software isn't being interfered with by any apps. Then I'd that doesn't work, I need a new phone! So friggen aggravated!

Vickie - yeah, that seems to be a logical course of action on their part. I'm not sure what else they can do. I called them yesterday, and they walked me through the standard APN settings, yada yada. I reset my APN settings before I called them, and they had me turn off the phone, then they refreshed the signal to the phone (provisioning, I guess - I'm not sure of the exact thing they did) and I turned on the phone again.

If the phenomena happens again today, I will post here to let you know. I feel like this is an issue with how the phone switches between different frequency bands. The phone seems to get "stuck." Definitely a software glitch... which might be remedied by a radio reflash or something; something I'm really not wanting to mess with, because I shouldn't have to. If T-Mobile wants to tell me to do it, I'll do it, but I doubt they will.

I'll update later...

Happened again. And in this state, if you go to select the "Network Mode" all the options are deselected. If you select one of them, it does nothing. The connection is "frozen."
Photo of Jay

Jay

  • 160 Points 100 badge 2x thumb
I guess I'm just going to select "WCDMA Only" in the "Network Mode" settings to prevent my phone from having a frozen connection.

Sucks. T-Mobile is supposed to call me back today to follow up and see if I'm still having the issue. I'll discuss it with them.

Jay

  • 160 Points 100 badge 2x thumb
FYI, this is what happens when the network connection is frozen - these options end up being deselected, and if you select one, it will still not work. You have to restart the phone.

Furthermore, the "4G" icon you see, with the bars, is meaningless. It is just frozen there, and not a real indication of a network connection.

Yeah exactly what used to happen, but my phone hasn't experienced that problem since over 2 weeks after I switched to "WCDMA only" option. i've experienced other problems such as random phone restarts after the update tho.. and I tried factory reset that didn't do anything.

Mine doesn't experience the problem either, with the "WCDMA only" option, until I travel out of my current location (i.e. my office) about a block away. It happened yesterday afternoon. So I rebooted the phone, and changed to auto, and I was in LTE. Basically, if you go through an area where the WCDMA coverage is spotty, and it loses it and has to regain it, the phone crashes. Sucks.

Something tells me that the 4.4.3 update (yet to come) will fix this.

Check out this article:

http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/03/...

Guess we'll wait and see. The article references "frequent data connection dropout fix" which may be related.... who knows.

Bottom line, it seems, is that you may as well not do a master reset until we get an updated software version. Resetting the phone and re-installing all your stuff seems like a waste of time until 4.4.3 is released.

To update this; the "WCDMA Only" option didn't solve the problem yesterday.

So, I guess waiting for 4.4.3 is the only option. Bummer.

Did anyone ever have any luck with this? I have the exact same issue. I tried resetting, switching to WCDMA only etc. TMobile has even sent me a new S4, I got a new SIM and nothing helped at all. I can't see sticking with them now that I have a phone I can't ever rely on.

I did try changing the settings as suggested above, none of that worked.
I received a refurb about a 2 months ago. So far so good. It works as advertised.
I believe the fault to be with Samsung and the building of the phones......good help is hard to get....

I had a higher up TMobile tech get back to me today. He told me that they have confirmed that there is an issue with the S4 and Android 4.4.2. He told me the ONLY way to resolve it currently would be to switch to 2G data only! That is crazy and makes my phone pretty much useless for anything besides calls and texts. He said switching to 4G might make it better but wouldn't solve the issue. He said they have no idea if/when it'll be fixed.

Also when i was at the mall earlier i stopped by a TMobile store and a rep there told me that they have been getting a lot of complaints about this but currently couldn't do anything about it. It blows my mind that nobody is doing anything about this.

Head over to SamMobile and download the firmware for your device. Make sure the firmware matches the country of origin for your device. Within the firmware download page, there is a link to Odin which is the file flashing utility used to install firmware. You must register first. Registration is free and so is the firmware download. The model number to search for is: GT-i9515.

All I can do is make calls and text! No multimedia messages, tho... Can connect to my email, the Internet! I did the switch to WCDMA only, but it didn't do a thing! I down loaded 4.4.4 and it has been wicked every since! HELP! :-(
