Samsung Software Update Breaks SMS Functionality in Galaxy S7

It might be a good idea NOT to do the most recent software updates for the Galaxy S7 phones. We KNOW it's affecting unlocked phones, such as my Straight Talk phone and other carriers as well.  Uncertain of carrier-locked phones.  Simply put, the update (the Straight Talk S7's rolled that update out 8/16, I have two, both are now experiencing the issue) has "braoken" the SMS Function.  If we send an SMS message, we receive the "Message failed to send" error, even though the text often goes through to the recipient. The concern is, while we can still have a text conversation, we end up with a ton of "failed" messages. Strangely, however MMS works great, so we're forced to send every message as an MMS message with a "ghost" message to some unassigned landline (in my case, my home number) as a "group" conversation.

Samsung refuses to take responsibility.  They're saying contact the carrier.  The carrier says "contact samsung".  It's not carrier specific.  It's happening on multiple carriers.  Samsung will not acknowledge the problem nor are they offering any type of solution.

Until we can find some way to make them take accountability for their update and fix it....users might want to delay or avoid that software update that's rolling out.

Is this something you can help us get the word out on?

I'm sorry to hear that. Have you tried various troubleshooting options such as factory reset or another sms app?

Factory reset every way possible...(via the settings screen and the power+home reboot, etc option). Other SMS apps do the same thing.  Tried Handcent, Go SMS Pro.  No luck. It's an update issue and they will NOT acknowledge it or fix it.  It's infuriating.  That's why we're trying to get the word out... one would think they've GOT to do SOMETHING if everyone who's having this problem starts raising cain about it...

OR.... find a way to uninstall that most recent update....but that doesn't seem like an easy option.. as you can see from those links above...it IS happening to others...

You can actually fairly easily. Using Samsung Odin is surprisingly easy to flash a Samsung to a different OS version to root it.

and what stops it from doing it all over again the minute it realizes it doesn't have that update anymore
?

Doing what all over again exactly? If it's the update that's messing it up , and you revert it, just don't download the update until a new one comes along that doesn't have the issue.

that answers it - thanks - I just....it feels so wrong being forced to root phones and, basically, hack the thing, just to get back basic functionality that was broken by a manufacturer update that they won't acknowlege....just....seems wrong...ya know?

Sure does. At least it's still functional just sending error messages each time. You can also try switching to whatsapp and other messaging appstore where possible.

Yes but I meant non SMS solutions such as whatsapp if possible.

I know you've tried dedicated SMS apps but Do you use FB messenger? Try going through that with your SMS (so it does SMS & messenger messages in one place) and see if that helps for now until they (Samsung) push out an update.

I don't have active facebook (personal/employment reasons).  And the question becomes...how do we get samsung to even acknowledge it, much less push an update?  Will see if whatsapp will do it.

Get everyone in the threads you've seen around the web to message Samsung on Twitter and FB about the issue, enough ppl start complaining about it then I'm sure Samsung will push a small patch update to fix it asap.

You'd be surprised what you can accomplish if you swamp a corporation on Twitter.

Whatsapp doesnt appear to manage SMS/MMS - only to contacts who also have whatsapp - unless i'm missing something - that won't work .... :(

Or for those who have already upgraded, downgrading to a previous firmware version might be an option. No root required. Over at Sammobile, I'm looking at the S7 Edge (SM-G935U - your phones' model number may differ) under both Tracfone and Verizon - the update versions are identical between the two carriers. There are four updates for Android 7 prior to 08/16. The latest update 08/16 is not visible as it is relatively new.

Has anyone made any headway with this situation?  New workarounds? Response from the manufacturer, anything?  I'm finding nothing.
