When will this device get updated? I checked the FB wall of koodo and nothing. I'm looking to know the date of the release of the 4.4.2 kitkat update forS3 andriod device.

On a side note:
I bought my phone at factory direct unlocked. Will my phone relock to its original carrier if I update it to 4.4.2?

Hi Austin,

If you haven't received the update over the air, the best way to check to make sure you can update your device is to connect it to Samsung Kies on your computer and connect the device and allow the update to be put through on your phone. The software is free to download and you can back up your phone as well so you don't lose any information.

Hope that helps answer your question :)

You say you got it from factory direct unlocked? Which model # is it? If it's the international model (i9300) than I believe that Samsung said they won't be updating it due to the lower RAM than the NA model. My girlfriend is on Fido and she got the update weeks ago. It's the version that Koodo and every other North American carrier sells, which got the 1.5ghz dual-core Krait 400 processor instead of the quad core exynos in the international model.

Another option is to download and install the firmware upgrade by visiting SamMobile, (link to SamMobile below). You will need to register first. Registration is free and so is the firmware download. The 4.4.2 update was released in June 2014. You will need Odin, a utility required to flash the firmware to your S3.

Click the 'Firmwares' tab on the SamMobile page. Enter the model number in the 'Search device here...' box. Click on the blue link in the left column labelled 'SGH-i747M' and follow the instructions for downloading Odin and installing the update.

If the phone doesn't have the 'M' after the model number, it's not a Canadian model and likely a U.S. variant (AT&T) as shown below. The highest Android version is 4.1.1 and if the update is performed using their firmware, it will revert back to AT&T. The unlock however, should remain intact.

The reason you're not getting updated to 4.4.2 is because you have the U.S. version S3 and Android firmware updates for those versions stopped at 4.1.1. I was under the impression you had the Canadian version and that you may have left out the "M' by mistake. Other than that, the i747 and i747M models are identical.

I'm going to say that there's a possibility you may lose the carrier unlock because you're flashing Koodo-based firmware over what I believe to be AT&T-based firmware. Normally, carrier unlocks are permanent, but in this case it's difficult to say for certain.

You'll still be able to update to 4.4.2 and use the phone with a Koodo SIM card, but you may run the risk of getting locked to the Koodo network. Only way is to try it and find out for yourself. No guarantees on this one.
