I'm having troubles getting pictures form my phone onto my laptop running XP. It doesn't matter if I'm in MTP or PTP. I get a portable device screen that has three choices. Open device to view files using Windows Explorer, Sync digital media files to this device using Windows Media Player, or Take no action. Any help would be appreciated. I am moderately computer literate

There's no 'open device to view files' option? That's odd. You could try this method here http://smallbusiness.chron.com/transf... or I use android file transfer, I'm not sure if it works with the s3 as it doesn't work with all android phones.

The methods in the website doesn't work as I don't get the "tap on usb connection" or the wifi direct screen. I'm wondering if I could just install an sd card and transfer them to my laptop that way?

Have you tried the sync option that pops up.? If so what's it do?
