roughly how much is 500mb of data. all i use is google and occasionally maps and you tube .my phone is the large alcatel android

Browsing websites won't use a whole lot unless there's a lot of high resolution, uncompressed photos.

I would avoid streaming much YouTube with only a 500mb plan, especially HD video on an LTE connection with a large screen device. It can eat it up faster than you expect. Try to use WiFi for that.

Maps is okay but it depends how long your trips are and how often you need turn by turn directions, if at all.

You might want to consider at least a 750mb or 1GB plan and go down from there if you need to. It's usually a bit cheaper than paying the overage rates.

I am as gearhead doing very well on less than 200 MB of data just by not streaming and following a few tips. WiFi is your best friend, not Google.
