Why does telus have better roaming plans than koodo? They have 1GB, unlimited talk and text for $80 in US while koodo has 750MB, unlinited talk and text for $75. Also telus has unlimited text for $15 for 30 days while koodo has it for $20. Why doesnt koodo get a cheaper roaming plan? It is a discount carrier!

Probably because their base plans are higher than Koodo.

Roaming is the one item carriers don't have direct control over. They are re-selling someone else's service, and it's a direct out-of-pocket expense to maybe several suppliers for them as opposed to adding extra free airtime on their own network.

Canadian roaming packages to the US are typically quite expensive. If you are going to be gone for more than one month, then it's cheaper to unlock and get a US SIM or even a US phone.

For $100 US, you can save the price of an unlock, get a decent 4" android LG41 Tracfone with 1200 minutes, 1.2 gig of 3G data and 1200 texts that never expire as long as you use the phone once in a six-month period. Less attractive phones can be had for even less. If you visit the US several times a year or for an extended period, this option is very economical.

But don't expect much in the way of customer service or even roaming in the US, let alone Canada.
