I'm going to be in the states for a couple weeks this spring, and I'm just wondering what my options are for roaming add-ons.  All I want to be able to do is text and connect to wifi in my hotel room.

If I connect to wifi while in the states, do I get charged anything?  Will wifi still work if I keep my phone on airplane mode?  I never use data and it will be turned off the entire time I'm in the US.

Hi there!

Few things to say...

So here's all the info about Roaming in the USA:

To answer the other question, If you put your phone on Airplane Mode, you will be able to use all your phones options except CALLING, TEXTING and DATA, so if on Airplane mode the whole time, dont expect any charges!

Hi Jessica,
Right now there are 2 options: easyroam or pay-per-use. If you want to use easyroam, you would have to follow steps in the link and add it on your account.

However,  you said you will use some texts and no data, pay-per-use will be cheaper. (Voice rate (per minute) $1.50 Data $5/20 MB Outgoing SMS $5/100 outgoing texts You would have to remove the easyroam add-on (if you had). Just keep the voice roaming add-on. $5 for 100 outgoing texts is a better deal if you are texting most of the time.

if you are on airplane mode, you can enable your wifi and connect to the internet.

Local wifi is independent of Koodo roaming, so you have to check with them if they charge you anything. Koodo cannot charge you for wifi there.

Use pay-per-use for texting. It's $5 for the first outgoing one, then the next 99 and all incoming are free, until your next billing cycle when the $5 charge kicks in again. You have to leave cell service on... just avoid the temptation to pick up any calls.

In the hotel, put handset in airplane mode then manually turn on wifi. No voice, no mobile data, just wifi will work at no charge to you.
