I was not given notification of going over available minutes an plan and feel had I have known of this I definitely would not have used a fraction of the airtime, I have been a costumer since 2009 and have been happy but don't think I should have to pay this ridiculous amount

You didn't know how many minutes were in your plan?  You didn't consider using the Koodo App or Self-serve to track your consumption?  

To my knowledge, no carrier offers notification of minutes consumed,  outside the app or website.
