I just bought my first cell phone last week. The store clerk asked me
for an email, and while I have an alternate email that I use for signing up for most things, I figured I would want to receive these emails in my real email account that I check often. I also never expected to receive anything more than necessary billing information.

This is a university email address that I have had for 4 years with not a single spam email. I have given out this email only to my friends, family and teachers. There is no other place that these strangers could have gotten my email address. But lo and behold, 5 days after purchasing my first phone and giving my email to the clerk, I have 2 spam messages from disposable email addresses.

How do I stop these from happening? Should I change my signup email? Or has Koodo already sold my data at this point? I am very disappointed in what otherwise seemed to be an alright company.

Maddy, we are extremely protective of your personal info! We absolutely do not sell your info to anyone for any reason. I assume the emails were totally unrelated to Koodo, am I correct in saying that?

Yes, I have found the problem. Thank you for the quick reply, and it's nice to hear that I was wrong in my assumptions!

I get lots of spam and the email address is shared in a number of ways. And I found with some of my family who send out messages to a bunch of people, and they do not BCC the email so it is visible to everyone on that email list. So that is just one example. FYI: I never had a problem after signing up with Koodo, they are great!!

Indeed. Correlation does not imply causation.

You learned that at University, didn't you?  ;)

I asked around my university and apparently many people have received the same spam emails today. It is more likely that some company was able to access the school's email directory. Sorry to bother you, but the timing was very coincidental.
